This study deals with the disease, symptoms, and treatment throughout a
lifelong history by Queen Jangyeol, who was the second queen of King Injo.
"The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty『承政院日記
(Seungjeongwonilgi)』" includes various medical records about the king and
queen. Queen Jangyeol had lived throughout total 4 reigns : King Injo, King
Hyojong, King Hyunjong, and King Sukjong, and could not have a child.
The characteristic diseases Queen Jangyeol had during the reign of King Injo
were epilepsy(癎疾) and hemoptysis(吐血). The diseases she had during the
reigns of King Hyojong, King Hyunjong, and King Sukjong were
schizophreniform disorder(癲狂), cold(感冒), vomiting(嘔吐), dysentery(痢候),
edema(浮腫) and fever(煩熱). When she got married and entered the palace, King Injo had a favorite concubine Jo So-yong. Queen Jangyeol was expelled to
Gyeongdeok in the 23rd reign of King Injo because of her disease. Royal
doctors made a diagnosis of her disease as epilepsy(癎疾) and prescribed
Chungsim-Ondam-Tang(淸心溫膽湯), Yongnoe-Ansin-Hwan(龍腦安神丸),
Hoechun -Yijin-Tang(回春二陣湯) and Gami-Youngsin-Hwan(加味寧神丸).
However, she stopped taking them after King Injo died. Royal doctors who
were in charge of Queen Dowager Jaui''s health got punished for incorrect
prescriptions in the reign of King Injo. She took medicines such as
So-jojung-Tang(小調中湯) that complemented the stomach and
Gagam-Ondam-Tang(加減溫膽湯) that removed the phlegm pattern(痰證) until the
6th reign of King Hyojong. She had a cold as of the 8th reign of King Hyojong
and took drugs such as Hyeongbang-Paedok-San(荊防敗毒散) that treated the
illness caused by outer qi(外感) and Chungwi-Sahwa-Tang(淸胃瀉火湯) that
removed the fever of stomach.
When King Hyojong and his servant died, the 1st and 2nd Yesong(禮訟)
dispute occurred. She treated the damaged stomach and cold(感冒) during the
reign of King Hyunjong and had been healthy until the 13th reign of King
Sukjong. On the other hand, she had a cold(感冒) again after the fire incident
and died in August of the 14th reign due to the complications.
The disease might be a heat stroke(暑病) because the symptom usually
happened in the summer and it happened spasmodically. While there are many
precedent studies about the diseases of the king and prince in Joseon Dynasty,
there are few thesis about the queen. This study is the first thesis that
surveyed the diseases and prescription of Queen Jangyeol following times and
the association with other studies can be obtained through it. Also, it is
significant that it can help the modern medicine related to the General
Gynecology.
