The chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin(田岡永信) accepted discipline of Kanwha- Seon(看話禪) which had been established at middle of 12th century among discipline method of Josa-Seon(祖師禪). He edified discipliners with Kanwha-Seon and left sermon for guideline. 『Eonhadeao(言下大悟)』 is his sermon book, and it is best material with which we could examine who he is.
In the chapter II, Life of chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin, it describes his life story from his birth, entering Buddhist priesthood, seeking for truth, in which he got enlightenment, and edification of students through this and to the moment of his death.
In the chapter III, Kanwha-Seon of chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin, the history of introduction of Kanwha-Seon to Korea and development of Kanwha-Seon by chief monk Jeonkang was discussed.
For the subject of panchisaengmo(板齒生毛, having hair from front teeth) that he remembered and studied in meditation, its method of the study, its meaning and the importance of it were examined.
About this subject which originated from Jojujongsim(趙州從?), not only he himself use it as a subject for enlightenment, but he presented this subject and checked it up and told the method of remembering and studying subject to all who accept and teach other people.
And then in the chapter IV, method of studying subject, Kanwha-Seon and common subject were investigated, and the occurrence of the wordless subject and its inheritance, and Jeonkangyeongsin''s presentation of the method of its study were examined. The origin of wordless subject is question-answer between Jojujongsim and one monk. But it was at 5th chief monk Beobyeon''s Sangdang sermon that it functioned as a subject in full scale. After this, the wordless common subject has been inherited as representative common subject in Kanwha-Seon discipline till now.
In the chapter V, the chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin''s Seon question-answer and Seon ideology, he presented various actual Beobgeoyang(法擧量) related to Seon question-answer that Jeonkang himself performed.
And three subject of logic of non-discrimination, inheritance of treasure of secret law, practice of non-obsession etc., which were contained in his question-answer, were examined through sermon book 『Eonhadaeo』.
Jeonkangyeongsin shows various form of Seon question-answer through 『Eonhadaeo』. Not only Jeonkangyeongsin himself participated in conversation from the beginning, but there are things with form of borrowed words about others'' question-answer. Each paragraph of Seon question-answer has different subject. Each subject emphasize to remember and study live phrase, and it is summarized as emphasis on inheritance of treasury of secret law, and non- obsession and story about main character etc.
In the chapter VI, chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin and current Korean Buddhism, the detailed characteristic about edifying method of chief monk Jeonkangyiongsin was examined, and furthermore the relationship of tradition of Kanwha-Seon and Korean Buddhism was discussed. The method of chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin''s edification was based on chief monk''s Seon style that the normal life based on original mind is function of enlightenment and sublimated shape by practice of enlightenment. Because what the chief monk had sought for was not only Josa-Seon but the history of Korean Seon method is the history of Josa-Seon style.
The chief monk Jeonkangyeongsin accepted whole of Josa-Seon method like above and applied it to all over his discipline and enlightenment, and edification. It appeared as teaching of non- obsession which asks not to stick in our daily lives first of all. For this, he emphasized that in case of breakage of common subject, it must be recognize as Josakwuan(祖師關). The meaning that the common subject must break Josakwuan(祖師關) points out that to reach the level of a chief monk, they must pass through Josakwuan(祖師關).
And for the method to remember and study the subject, he mentioned a few separated ones. First of all, in remembering and studying a subject, he emphasize that people must doubt about the subject as studying attitude, but must not obsessed to that doubt.
Furthermore chief monk Jeonkang showed good model to the tradition of Kanwha-Seon and Korean Buddhism about how they must function in the future. He showed right way against seeking for only enlightenment or Seon question-answer which easily goes to language play to people who are sick for enlightenment without correct understand on Kanwha-Seon. That is the part which has to be discussed and regretted at current Korean Buddhism.
