The age of direct imperialism has come to end. The problems of imperialism and colonialism, however, are not limited to the past but still exercise their power to make culture and ideology active in the reality of those who have experienced colonialism. Studies, up to the present, have chiefly been concerned with the violence and damage which imperialists inflicted, and with questions of casting off colonial leftovers. On the other hand, they have neglected the culture which infiltrated our unconscious minds and brought with it imperialistic emotions, rationale, and imagination.
Shin, Dong-yub's poetically expressed anarchy is derived from Taoism. He used the idea of anarchism as a method of criticising the ruling ideology, colonialism, and negative modernity. In a broad sense, anarchism will furnish material in the discourse against colonialism, because it not only criticizes modem civilization and culture, but also pursues an ecological viewpoint and the Taoistic opposition to an exclusively human-centered society. It expresses Shin's desire for an end to inequality and a beginning of independence without authority in general, and it presents his ideal anarchical yet secure world. Since this anarchistic utopia is expressed through a Sartre-like view of the Other, it is clearly not mere escapism, but vital radicalism This utopian characteristic of his thought also provides critical awareness and invites a spirited reformation of then-current reality.
