The paper discusses the details of the ethological education of the Crown Princes in early Chosun dynasty. The motivation comes from the belief that ethological education is the keystone of the cultivation of democratic citizens, one of the aims of social education. The paper tries to provide some helpful perspectives about the right way to pursue ethologal education in current situations where irrational and immoral social behavior is widespread.
We investigate two aspects of the ethological education of the Crown Princes. The first aspect concerns how to select the teachers. The selection procedure involves (1) considering the candidates who excel in scholarships and in virtue, and (2) once selected, treating them well in order to make the ethological education of the Crown princes done with stability and convictions. The other aspect concerns the content of ethological education. The education focuses on the principles of 'Yo-je(孝悌)' and of 'Choong-sin(忠)信', which are given in Liji(禮記). The textbooks for the education come from the canons of Confucianism and of history. The class was given three times a day, and discussion and practice, rather than one-way lecturing was preferred.
