The aim of the present study was to review literary characteristics of Yeon-Hyun Cho known as one of major critics in the contemporary history of Korean literary criticism. He has established a monopolistic position in Korean critics’ society over the post-Korean-War time period, presumably through his already-acquired authority. The present research focused on accounting for a possibility that he could acquire such an authority that might have arisen from a process for developing his early criticism based on his published critique collection of Literature and Thought(LT)
His criticism started from literary disputes processed between Korean Leftists versus Rightists during the time period of the Liberation of Korea through the outbreak of the Korean War. His writings in the critique collection LT reflect that his criticism performed during the Liberation time period was underlain by his heavy preference for conservative Rightists’ ideology, and theory of pure literature. The LT further represents that he has established his critical criteria and systems. His criticism made around the time of the publication of the LT revealed his prominent creativity on disputes and theories.
However, this aspect of his criticism may be problematic due to an expression of his authority to actively control others’ will of speech. From the standpoint of P. Bourdieu, it is concluded that his criticism can be one of representative examples of symbolic strife utilizing a linguistic behavior.
