In the VSS control with a conventional sliding surface, the trajectories have the reaching phase. Since the sliding mode can not be realized during this phase, the trajectories may be sensitive to the disturbances and parameter variations. A novel sliding surface is proposed to improve the robustness in the reaching phase. The position control of a PM DC servo motor using the proposed sliding surface is carried out and compared to the one using the conventional sliding surface. The sliding mode occurs in entire trajectories with the new sliding surface and the improved robustness is obtained.
