The king of the Chosun dynasty had many kings of names. During the early Chosun dynasty, king's first legitimate son had a childhood name right after his birth. To the childhood name was intentionally given a bad meaning for praying his good fortune in the future. After the appointment as Crown Prince, he had an adult name and an appointed name. ills appointed name was printed in Seja-In(the official seal of Crown Prince). After the ceremony of accession to the throne, he was called King of Chosun, which was the appointed name given by Emperor of China.
After the passing of king, two different posthumous names were selected through deep consideration by the royal court. The first is known as Siho(諡號) which was based on the late king's speech and behavior during his reign. The other is called Myoho(廟號) which was based on the achievements of his monarchy In addition, Myoho was composed of such two styles of namin as Jo(祖) and Jong(宗). The case of Jo was related to the grand achievements of his tenure. Jong called attention to the king's specific accomplishments and virtues. In conclusion, the kinds and meaning of king's name in the Chosun dynasty symbols the Confucian consciousness concerning life and death.
