In this study, women's voluntary work was defined as a meaningful social activity. This study attempted to suggest ways for activating women's voluntary work based on the overall review of the previous studies. Women's volunteer activity in Korea began as a non-governmental activity and it is presently supported by the government as one of the major policies for women. By 2000, 13.8% of Korean women officially participated in volunteer activity and 80% of them has worked for more than 6 months. Majority of women volunteers were found to be middle aged, nlarried and middle-class, and over half of them had Jobs. Those women generally showed positive psycho-social characteristics in terms of self-esteem, role satisfaction. inner locus of control, sense of responsibility and life satisfaction.
In spite of many positive aspects of volunteer activities women do, their activities were centered to the area of social welfare such as simple canng and household chores. In addition, the decision for participating and continumg activities tended to be influenced by family-related factors and others' perspectives. This indicates that women' participating and dropping out of the activity were strongly related to stereotyped sex-role and discrimination against women's labor and traditional view of women's role.
The conclusive suggestions of this study are as follows. First. women's volunteer activity should be developed and activated m the perspectives of women. Second, the contents and the methods of activities should be developed through effective programs. And finally, the regulation for the volunteering should be made and administrative and institutional support are needed for the better activity
