This article discusses the prejudices against women in education, especially about equity issues that have arisen in the socialization of gender role education in Korea. As far as formal education is concerned, equality between men and women has been achieved. However, the women`s gender role is still that of the basic virtue of women in the school environment despite of the immense opportunities of public education and modernization, including how industrialization has altered the lives and roles of women in Korea. In traditional Korean society, the women`s lot was confined to the household and education for women had been concerned about preparing them to pursue domesticated lives. Although presently, even though educational opportunities for women have increased, it is quite clear that many of their expectations such as neatness and quietness are ones which girls fit into better than boys. The image of women created by the mass media, literature, and contained in school text books is very likely to reflect those female characteristics that are compassionate and sympathetic rather than self-determined or independent; thus women are portrayed as dependent, selfless, lacking self-confidence, and with an inferiority complex. It is suggested that, in this rapidly changing global society, looking ahead and attempting to make forecasts concerning the relation of women and men, it is crucial to focus on humanistic and progressive approaches in gender education. It is recommended that to live harmoniously and work closely, society must teach girls and boys greater respect and understanding for each other by giving them opportunities to experience ways in which both groups may master the same challenges. In other words, it would be important for girls to experience mastery of the same activities as boys in order to develope their innate talent to prepare for future jobs. With this understanding, feminists will have to strive to strengthen the girls` autonomy and continue women`s insistence about the values of concern, life and peace, It is possible that women will advance over the obstacles on both these fronts at once.
