The range of this study covers the formative characteristics of the pattern of 64 Hanbok fabrics both for man and woman that 5 high class shops located in Kangnam. Seoul have been selling in the last two years.
For the method of the study. fabrics were divided into two categories for man and woman. The categories were split into patterned fabric and plain fabric by its pattern, and then types, arrangement, characteristic, and symbols of each pattern were investigated. According to sex distinction and item. pattern of Hanbok fabrics seemed different. For woman. plain fabrics were more common and small and simple checkerboard arrangement were easily observed. Types of patterns were plant pattern such as peony and lotus flower and lucky omen pattern that symbolize splender. elegance. and feminine image. For man, splendid patterns were generally used. Irregular arrangement was more commonly used than regular arrangement. Cloud and lucky omen pattern were commomly used, and animal and plant pattern were also observed that symbolize bold. cheerful. and dynamic image. Types of patterns in Hanbok fashion fabrics had a similar trend to the one in Chosun dynasty, but it seemed to lack in variety of structure.
This study can be practically used. firstly as a supplement data for modern history of Hanbok and secondly as a way of seeking for the advisable future by developing currently circulated Hanbok fabrics.
