The idea for this paper originated from the healing ministry of Jesus. Healing was a divine protocol to make people believe what Jesus said. This paper argues that Christian teachers can play the role of healers. The teacher's therapeutic value to the student may take different forms, for example, problem solving, counseling, face-to-face dialogue, participating in small group work, on-line chatting, talking to a class, reading the Bible, watching a video together, sharing a meal at the table, or visiting a prison cell. Healing and teaching were ways and means for Jesus to verify the coming of God's reign. Likewise, Christian teachers today need to realize that they, too, can heal through their educational efforts.
Three tasks in this paper address the therapeutic function of Christian education. first, the biblical exegesis of the term healing, second, theological reflection on healing, and third, four therapeutic roles of Christian education based on Jesus' healing ministry. In this paper, I have proposed four functional roles of Christian education for healing. They are basically the four different types of healing that Jesus used for teaching the coming of the kingdom of God' to raise up, to open the eyes to light, to cast out evil spirits, and to give or bring to life.
Pedagogical healing may be new jargon. However, it deals with divine healing. This paper has attempted to promote a new way of Christian teaching involving diverse dimensions. No matter what we introduce in terms of instructional methodology, the aim is ultimately focusing on and rendering experiences of the reign of God. Simply put, healing in this paper refers to the divine healing where the reign of God is to be experienced. The author believes that teachers should take on the role of healers and have a full commitment toward healing and caring. Care should be the pre- and post- healing or symbiotic act. The term, pedagogical healing, denotes that students can be healed by teaching, while learning. It can be specified in the four ways of healing as described above. The ultimate purpose of pedagogical healing is to restore a right relationship between the healed and God.
