Eupji(邑誌) which started to be published lively after the middle period of Cho-son Dynasty reflects two purposes strongly. Firstly, it has a strong purpose to raise their regional pride by compiling their local history and culture. Secondly, it also has a strong purpose to secure the basic information to collect taxes for the central government. YeongSeongJi(寧城誌), which we dealt with in this thesis, shows these following features.
Firstly, YeongSeongJi is an 'Eupji' of the county of Cheon-an published in 1852. It is different from the national 'Tongji(通誌)' like 'Yeojidoseo(輿地圖書)', and it is distinguished in that it filed and explained only one certain region. Detailed arrangements about the distribution of the influential families, the time they came into Cheon-an, and the fact of their residing, provide important provisos to understand the structure of the societies and the local elites in Cheon-an in the mid-nineteenth century. Secondly, It reflects strongly their prides about the Confucianism culture. That is why YeongSeongJi arranged the people of this region widely and specifically compared to other regions. Thirdly, it has a unique feature. Though the publication of 'Eupji' strongly reflects the will of the magistrate of a county and it is true that the magistrate played an important role in compiling it, the local elites also cooperated in fundraising and supported the magistrate. With the positive role of the magistrate and the support of the local elites as compilers, they raised the uniqueness of Kunji. Fourthly, YeongSeongJi has instructive features. It reflects the tendency of historical trial and error model as historical books which try to find morals through responding past and present. Fifth, it has a strong purpose to recover the order and solve the problems of the society by finding the circumstances and problems of the region.
In this regard, YeongSeongJi is the important material which not only contains the society, economy, and the culture of Cheon-an in the mid-nineteenth century, but also influenced greatly on recognizing history as units of 'Gun(郡)' and 'Hyun (縣)' in historical thoughts.
