This article examines Chuk San Pak(竹山 朴氏) family who had steadily produced the govemment officials in order to understand the nature of Koryo Dynasty that was a aristocratic society. For a systematic analysis it classifies Koryo Dynasty with two times as the First Half of Koryo Dynasty and the Latter Half of Koryo Dynasty. And in the case of Chuk San Pak of the Latter Half of Koryo Dynasty, it clasifies two branch of family again.
The founder of O1uk San Pak family is Pak Ki-o(朴奇悟) who was a one of Samhan Gongsin(三韓功臣) in the reign of King Taejo. There is no record about Pak Sul(朴述) who was a son of Pak Ki-o in Koryosa. But Pak Ch'ung-suk(朴忠淑) who was a grandson of Pak Ki-o passed by Ch'amji chongsa(知政事) and rose to Mnuha sirang p'yongjangsa(門下侍郞平章事). After that there is no record about Pak On-yu Who was a son of Pak Ch'ung-suk and Pak Hyong(朴衡) who was a son of Pak On-yu and Pak Yong-hu(朴永侯) who was a son of Pak Hyong in Koryosa. The family prospered again in Pak Yong-hu's sons times. Pak Yong-hu hoad two sons. The first ron's name is Pak Chong-yu(朴挺) and the other's name is Pak chung-hyok(朴挺奕). Pak Chong-yu passed the govemment service examinations and rose to
Ch'mirwon pusa(樞密院副使), His son, Pak Yuk-hwa also rose to Chwa pokya(左僕射).
In the branch of Pak Chong-yu, Pak In-sok(朴仁碩) assumed the position of Hobu sangso(戶部尙書), so he consolidated Chuk san Pak family position. And his son, Pak So(朴犀) performedl a meritorious deed in the war with Mongol. But he lost his position by Mongl's pressure. His family had atrohied under the Mongol rule. After the reign of King Kongmin the branch of Pak Chong-yu prospered again because Pak Bo-ro(朴普老) succeeded his life and assumed the position of Munha p'yongri(門下評理)
But the branch of Pak chung-hyok prospered under the Mongol rule. Pak Hwi(朴暉) who was a grandson of Pak chung-hyok's grandson rose to Chonbup p'anso(典法判書)' Pak Chon-ji(朴全之) was in King Ch'ungson's favor after passing the government service examinations, am he took the leading role in reformist politics. Since Pak Chou-ji' success Chuk San Pak family had ranked with another aristocrat family. Pak Won(朴遠) who was a son of Pak Chon-ji got married with Hong Chabon's granddaughter, and he rose to Chongdang munhak(政堂文學.). After that most of scions of Chuk San Pak family succeeded in their lives and got married with scions of another aristocrat family.
Chuk San Pak family did not vigorous activity in early Koryo Dynasty, but after the reign of King Injong they grew up as aristocrat family. Although they had Some rise and fall, they had maintained their position. In order to maintain their position they acted in harmony with the Military rule(武臣政權), and the Mongol rule, and they got positively married with another aristocrat family.
