In this thesis, I studied the cultural significance of girl student in Lee Sang's novels. The girl student itself indicates an affection toward civilizarion in his novels. Because girl student who appears in the kaehwagi(enlightenment period) at the beginning has closely relation with the evolution of civilization. Namely, the educated class want to make a platonic companion of girl student in 1910s, but girl student is popular with common people who want to fall in love with and to make a new home in 1930s when civilization was active. So, the girl student frequently appears in contemporary modernism writers's novels.
Contemporary modernism writers(Bac-Tae-Won, Kim-Yu-Jeoung, Lee-Tae-Jun) criticize girl student in the negative in their novels. They describe in this way : The girl student falls into luxurious habits because of her vanity, they are dressed up the modern fashion such as high hill, short hair, book case, and absorbed in modem habits such as shopping, playing the organ. In the result, contemporary modernism writers take notice of outward appearances of girl student.
But, Lee Sang takes notice of inward thought of girl student. Lee Sang's viewpoint is remarkable in the form and content. Both the former and the later reveal Lee Sang's rhetoric and recognition as modernist. First, in the form Lee Sang describs girl student as things in order to show the realization and increase of girl student's self-control. Second, in the content Lee Sang suggests that girl student has new thought like the awaked love. Therefore, we can confirm lee sang's will of civilization through the cultural significance of girl student.
