The 1950's tradition argument is characterized by modernity, history, and globalism. By its modernity, the significance is that the tradition's influence on todays living standards should be taken seriously, and that the tradition itself should be revived as well: discussing the tradition can present us with a criterion to resolve modern problems.
In order to select traditions among many historical heritages, we need to be equipped with a historical consciousness. Acceding to traditions does not merely imply sticking to the old past form, but grafting the traditional spirits that underlie literary works into the contemporary ones.
On the other hand, the traditions global aspect is significant in finding the connection between national factors and the international ones in traditions. Choi ll-Soo considered settling this contradiction by combining the resisting spirit of Choonhyangjon with western humanism.
The argument becomes more distinguished when the question is asked: What is the tradition of our literature? There are many answers to this question: some say that the tradition underlying Korean literature is endowed with the spirits of introspection, patience, and elegance. Or that the literature has a tendency to 'lyricism' even though the meaning is obscure.
All these arguments were based on classical literary works that our ancestors briskly created in those times. linking the cultural traditions to present-day, creative activities can be found mainly in the works that adopt classical materials. Take for example.
Choonhyang's Feeling, written by Park Jae-Sam and Choobonsa written by Seo Jung-Joo, both of which are successful examples that give a modem reconstruction of the classical materials. However, the poem of Seo Jung-Joo, which adopted Shilla Dynasty as material, made the ancient times seem mysterious by expressing Shilla as an absolute, eternal and permanent space and time. likewise, the classical material, which lacks creativeness, is nothing but a following of the past literature forms. A true tradition is one that is connected with the philosophy of a life or an individuals world view and which thus affects the present life.
