The novel Abolishment of Prostitutes, aimed at the abolishment of Giseng, which was published in 'New People's Opinion' in 1921, implies the effort of the society to move toward modem period of monogamy. In the background of the abolishment of Giseng, there were changes in social life, such as an introduction of 'affectionate love' which advocated spiritualization of the love between man and women, and the resulting establishment of the 'home' which is an modern shape of family relationship. The suicide of Kang Myung Hwa, a Giseng , and the publication of the Giseng magazine Long Grief, represented an anxious move in the rank of Giseng, and, together with criticizing eye against the society, was influencing the literature also. This is identified in the deaths of Gisengs, which is consistently found in Lee Kwang Su's No Affection, and in Kim Dong In's When the Eyes Were Barely Opened, and in Na Do Hyang's Illusory Joy.
Among these, the When the Eyes Were Barely Opened employs Geum Pae, a famous Giseng in Pyung Yang, as a heroine and describes the process of the fall of Giseng in its contemporary society. Here" the Geum Pae is similar to the Gisengs in other works in that she suffers mental conflicts regarding her life as a Giseng and eventually ends in death, but she differs in that she has an aspect of talented artist at least, Despite that, Geum Pae also comes to an unusual death, of which one cannot tell whether it was a suicide or an accident, and by this duplicates the image of Giseng or the process of the fall of Giseng in its contemporary society.
The death of Giseng, which was symbolized in Geum Pae, can be extended to the questions about the substance of the modern Chosun, in the aspect that it was caused largely from the transformation of the particular foundations of the modern notion, such as virginity and fidelity, into absolute frames of ethics, In addition, the image of Giseng who was perishing rapidly gives chances to ponder on the various aspects of the inner strengths of the culture of the Chosun.
