Death is an event which brings about change in the relationship between an individual and God. Since it means being cut off from the God of life, death is usually viewed negatively. In the Scriptures, there are three ideas of death: spiritual death, physical death, and eternal death.
Physical or corporeal death was originally a part of the natural order. However, the nature of death changed into one of penalty because of sin. All men after Adam die as sinners. Salvation through Christ means the restoration of natural death from the death of penalty.
Christians do not die as punishment for their sins due to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For Christians, death is the door to resurrection and eternal life. Therefore, it is noble before God's eyes. Also, by choosing martyrdom for the Lord and Gospel, a Christian can die a death more valuable than life itself.
The fearful attitude Jesus had before His death must not be the model for Christians. When facing death, they can act as Socrates did. The reason is that Jesus died a sinner's death for humankind, but Christians die to end their sins and enter the door to eternal life. Socrates died considering death to be the freedom of the soul from the body's prison, and how much more can Christians welcome death in the hopes of resurrection and eternal life.
To live life reflecting upon death is the better way of life. Thinking about death helps us gain wisdom about life while also helping us lead a more truthful, passionate, thankful, joyous and sanctified life that follows the Lord.
To overcome death, one should not regard death as something natural, have negative ideas about life, pursue long life, or hope for the immortality of the soul. Instead, the answer is in the hope of our own resurrection and our faith in Jesus Christ, who solved the problem of sin which is the cause of death and who was resurrected from the dead.
