Arguably, 'Literary Ecology', an area of studies that looks into the relations between ecology and lirerature, is a subject that has emerged since the beginning of the new century to draw much attention in the field. Although literary ecology has been discussed about often, it is still a subject of which the essence is hard to grasp. This is partly because the relations defined by a number of scholars of literary ecology and ecocriticism are ambiguous. Not only that, there are differing perspectives as to what ecologism is when it is the key idea shared by both literary ecology and eeocriticism. However, one thing can be said for sure about literary ecology and that is literary ecology places emphasis on eco-literature. Admittedly, many different terms are being used to refer Em-literature such as 'green literature' and 'life literature', but whatever the used teem may be, there is an overriding similarity among them. They all recognize a damaged relationship between nature and mankind as a threat, seek to inform the world of the troubled situation after digging into the underlying root cause and further show commitments to address the challenges.
Against this background, reviewing the eco critical aspects reflected in contemporary Korean novels can serve as a way to come to terms with ecological crisis of Korean society, which is considered one of the major challenges of the time. A firm conviction that this would pave the way for truly understanding the essence of Eco-literatureis what brought forth this paper. With this is mind, the paper examine the realities and causes of the ecological crisis by focusing on novels that deal with issues related to nuclear power plants which started to operate since the late 1980's and with stories of atomic bomb victims which have recently emerged as a national concern. The paper also includes authors' ecological visions which are projected through characters in the novels.
In novels describing realities of atomic bomb victims such as Neither a Tree nor a Grass, The Days-when it was like a Piece of picture, and A Long Road to the Place, gap between the victims' aspiration to escape from horrendous reality to free themselves from physical suffering and trauma and transferring to a world of freedom and balance overcoming their affliction and misfortune is indeed 'unbridgeable'
Meanwhile, oppressive and deceptive authorities and residents' awakening to the injustice power, their ecological realization of 'self directive being and the picture of ecological society they dream through ecological vision are witnessed in novels that deal with problems involving nuclear power plants such as Fire Wind, Unfamiliar Hometown, Winter Flower, and Dark Sunset. Yet, one thing should be clearly noted here that peoples' practice of 'demonstrations'in the novels both in their process of being exposed to ecologism and their effort to secure the vision of ecology is not a shortcut to ecological society. This is because of the concerns that a seemingly fragmental aspect of Eco-literaturemight be misused as a political propaganda or become a very seditious issue. Ultimately, the core of ecological way of thinking is to eschew those extreme confrontations and seek to return to a 'nature-like' society where pure reason and providence are appreciated. Of course this is not to suggest that we forego conveniences of modern civilization and return to a pristine nature or consider a social structure reform but instead attempt to change our way of thinking. Furthermore, the conversion of way of thinking is suggested in the paper as an alternative ecological vision to address problems associated with eco crisis, which is one of the biggest challenges the current mankind face at the present moment.
The purpose of the Eco-literature should be to guide both authoritative powers and individuals to recognize the principle of 'co-existence' by themselves and ultimately pursue a society where warm care and attention to the hurt and marginalized are prevalent. And this should be the kind of ecological society the Eco-literature seek after. To this end, Eco-literature should make a strenuous effort on one hand and face up challenges on the other to establish the ideal world.
