The purpose of this study is to define the Ecologism, which has been receiving a lot of spotlight recently, in Chan Jung's short stories in the perspective of Literary Ecology. Chan Jung constantly raises a question on destruction of humanity caused by the industrialization after 1990's. In particular, the author expresses deep regret over modern civilization that has grown far too fast. Moreover, by replacing this speed with his own 'time' he shows strong nostalgia for the world of nature before the civilization. In the process, he fully realizes the Ecology crisis and he explains how the civilization has destroyed the nature with an anti-civilization attitude.
Before examining Ecologism of Chan Jung's short story, it is essential to understand the clear definition of Ecology. This study also verifies the Ecology crisis on Chan Jung's short stories Deep River, Fragrance of the Stars and, Sandawha a through Ecocriticism based on theoretical definition of Ecologism. In addition, through the characters in the stories this study examines the author's Ecologism.
As a result, Chan Jung deeply expresses his regrets over the civilization with an anti-civilization viewpoint in Deep River. Meanwhile, he suggests a solution that the individuals who are victims of the civilization could find their places to stand bysecuring a 'space'. In this process, the study finds out that the author's Ecologism is a combination of the recognition of the Deep Ecology's Cycle of the life and the critical standpoint about anthropocentricism, and also a link to 'caring' of Ecofeminism.
In Fragrance of the Stan, the study saw a view of nature based on 'Biocentric equality' and the essential Ecologism of the Deep Ecology through the main character and the doctor who strive to overcome the Ecology crisis by 'self realization' through above view of nature. Moreover, the study reveals that the Ecology crisis the characters present is radical ambition in the civilized society that exploits nature as a master.
In Sandawha, a farmer who has lost his land due to the industrialization moves to the city and becomes addicted to cadmium while working in a factory. The story primarily shows the aspect of the Ecology crisis. The submerged land due to the dam construction and the main character, Suk Hoon Kim, who dies from chemical substance addiction can be seen as the Ecology crisis itself. Furthermore, the Ecologism that the main character realizes while he is dying is simulacre on rich land which can be viewed as an Ecologism based on the Ecofeminism.
As witnessed above, Chan Jung raises serious questions on current Ecology crisis with an anti-civilization perspective and at the same time the author tries to show various Ecologism through each different stories. However, the author's Ecologism only focuses on criticizing civilization that caused the destruction of nature and returning to nature on the basis of one-sided anti-civilization viewpoint.
Consequently, the author doesn't fully handle the Ecology crisis in society caused by humans ruling over others and superpower oppressing the weak. In short, it is deplorable that there is not enough consideration for finding a solution, as it is called 'Social Ecology vision', for 'self directive being'.
Comparing to the numerous Ecology arguments in the West, however, Korean modern novel's Ecology argument is at its initial stage. That signifies Korea still has endless potential to search for desirable Ecology arguments so it could find its true "beauty". Also in Chan Jung's case, the study believes that he will write stories with far more diverse Ecologism in the future.
