Luo-Jiao(羅敎) established by Luo-Zu(羅祖:1442-1527) during the middle of Ming Dynasty set a religious faith of Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(無生老母), which features characteristic incantation of eight letters, "Zhen-Kong-Jia-Xiang, Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(眞空家鄕, 無生老母)." Common characteristics of folk religions that appeared in the Ming-Ch'ing dynastic period are, first, that they based on the concept of triad embracing Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism(三敎合一). Secondly, the core concept of folk religions is a faith on Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(無生老母). Thirdly, various functional means realized from everyday routines are emphasized. The most frequently used form of incantation while reading and memorizing a holy book is "Zhen-Kong-Jia-Xiang, Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(眞空家鄕, 無生老母)."
Luo-Zu(羅祖) as the progenitor of Luo-Jiao(羅敎) was from low social class but achieved profound wisdom after 13 years of study. During the last two years of study, Luo-Zu(羅祖) established a theory of his own and finally realized "empty void(虛空)" as the origin of the Universe and Humanity. Tracing how the religious faith on Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(無生老母) was established, one can see that Luo-Zu(羅祖) changed the metaphysical concept of "empty void(虛空)" into a concrete and familiar one called "Jia-Xiang(家鄕)," so ordinary people could understand the concept more easily. Jia-Xiang(家鄕) or Zhen-Kong(眞空) has the same meaning as empty void and indicates the origin of everything in the Universe. Wu-Ji-Sheng-Zu(無極聖祖) recorded in 『Wu-Bu-Liu-Ce(五部六冊)』 can be called as a new type of god Luo-Zu(羅祖) created from original narratives of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Wu-Ji-Sheng-Zu(無極聖祖) is not only a controlling authority, but also a merciful Being meant to deliver the ordinary people. This Wu-Ji-Sheng-Zu(無極聖祖) came to represent the concept of Mu(母) with its great and mysterious creative power, and became Wu-Ji-Sheng-Mu(無極聖母). Then, finally, being added with the idea of Wu-Sheng(無生), Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(無生老母) was born out of Wu-Ji-Sheng-Mu(無極聖母). After this process, the religious faith on Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(無生老母), which uses the incantation of "Zhen-Kong-Jia-Xiang, Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(眞空家鄕, 無生老母)", was established and greatly influenced on most folk religions in Ming-Ch'ing Dynasty.
The 16th century of the mid-Ming Dynasty was a historical turning point that a new king was throned and also a time that economy flourished an people's consciousness about society grew up. About this time Luo-Jiao(羅敎) was a folk religion most successfully representing the changing spirit of the times. As there is an interpretive position that sees Luo-Zu(羅祖)‘s universal concept of "empty void" as an absolute spirit in a modern sense, so is it possible to think that Wu-Sheng-Lao-Mu(無生老母) is a religious thought which was born when new changes were embraced with a positive attitude. Folk religions of this period have new ideas different from the previous ones. Accordingly, this religious and historical meaning of this period can be found in the changes of religious ideas people experienced at this period.
