There are numerous varieties of historical documents related to the Korean embassies that visited Japan from 1607 to 1811. Further, those materials are held by numerous institutions and in private collections in both South Korea and Japan. Accordingly, it is an exhausting task for an individual researcher to examine each and every document while also analyzing the information that each presents. It is thus necessary to comprehensively search for, collect, and analyze a broad range of sources, and then to compose a database based upon those documents.
For example, if researchers can use a database of Korean embassies, they can know the names of Koreans who served in a particular embassy and their individual backgrounds as well as the activities in Japan of those Koreans. In addition, it also should be possible to compare and analyze the differences between and among embassies. In short, if a database of Korean embassies is constructed and utilized for research, scholars will be able to readily grasp such core data regarding the embassies as the individuals who participated directly and indirectly in Korean foreign relations through the embassies, the itineraries and sizes of the embassies, and the objects exchanged between Koreans and Japanese during the embassies.
However, in constructing this database, the design and structure of the database are important issues. In particular, in the case of a database built upon historical documents, it is most important that the documents be complete. The database of Korean embassies to Japan is not an exception. In order to include new documents as they are discovered, it will be necessary to revise the database’s structure. Such issues as a standardized structure for the database and the joint usage of information are being considered so as to be reflected in the database’s design.
