This Study is based on the problematic view on the cognition of body in Sinsoseol. In enlightenment era the attitude to human body had been changed. This change is originated in tne influx of the western modernity and modern medical science. In this period, the human body is a kind of 'machine'. Thus it starts with the propsition that the mechanical episteme of the body is the cause which has objected and estranged our bodies.
The body is a complex field in which individual, social, and political powers and relations are intermix. Especially the individual aspects of the human body is raised in enlightenment era and it is controled by the nation-state power. On the one hand the individual body need to be trained and strengthened, on the other hand it should be obedient to the 'power'. This is Michel Foulcalt's notion of 'discipline' and 'anatomo-politique'. Foulcault persist that in modern times the power does not oppress but discipline the individual by the knowledge and discourse of the body and sexuality. So I analyzed the early 20s century's discourse in Korea. The hygienic discourse and education discourse is realated by physiologic knowledge. The western modern physiology had an effect on the education and hygienic policy in this period. For example, for the effective education, mental and physical development stage of young students was considered seriously. In other hand, the obeidence of time and leading a regular life was very important for the sake of not only education but also body health.
This phase appeared in the same way at Sinsoseol. There, the problem concerned with character's body-for example injury, illness, remedy and cure etc.-was decisive factor in order to take a new turn in the narrative. Thus such as modern medical treatment, western doctor, quarantine system, physiologic knowledge, physical labor and physical education play an important role in Sinsoseol. In addition, Sinsoseol, same as education and hygienic discourse, appeared discipline purpose toward the individual body. So in this story, characters often obeyed to system and rule in school, army, job-site. Their body was trained and controled in order to be useful and obedient to modern society.
