The early period of Chinese modern theater can be classified into two; the domestic one and the overseas one, and the Jinhuatuan(進化團) represents the former, the Chunliujichang(春柳劇場) the latter. Even if they could be classified into different categories, the conception of modern theater was very similar. They regarded realism was the most remarkable feature of the modern theater.
Huangjinchixue(黃金赤血; The Yellow Gold and the Red Blood), a masterpiece of Jinhuatuan, mainly concerned about the spectacles for propaganda purpose. But their work was lacking the connection between the acts and scenes, because they had no idea about time-space structure of modern theater, as a result, this lack was substituted by the conception of Chinese traditional theater.
Jiatingenyuanji(家庭恩怨記; The Story of Indebtedness and Grudge in a Home), the most famous creative work of LuJingruo(陸鏡若), who was the leader of Chunliujuchang, had much more exquisite time-space structure than the Jinhuatuan’s. But this work included things that couldn’t happen in the time-space that the script had indicated. The script indicates that all the story happens in China shortly after the Xinhaigeming(辛亥革命), but in the ending of this work, it looks like a Western drama. The reason why the time-space structures that indicated by the script and by the drama make disharmony, was caused by the yearning for the Western modern theater, that everyone(including LuJingruo) in this theatrical company had.
Jinhuatuan and Chunliujuchang, the most outstanding theatrical companies of the early period of modern theater in China, both had problems to make their plays typical realism ones. The problems that they met look like a feature of the early period of modern theater in China.
