In this article, how the ancient people perceived time and determined timetables for their agricultural production, and how such perception and understanding was incorporated into policies regarding agricultural issues, will be examined.
First, several references to the issue of time spotted from the classic Korean historical text 『Samguk Sagi』and other epigraph materials will be examined and sorted into several types of reference, so that we could have a glimpse at the concept of time that the ancient people might have had for all those years. The calendars created at the time should have served as medium of temporal documentation, so they could be useful materials for us as well. The time cycles perceived, understood and embraced through such calendar materials and other documentations regarding the passing of time should have been utilized in productive activities, and especially in agricultural production. That would be examined, while the question of whether there was another way of determining timetables for agricultural production being addressed too. And how such timetables were tied into the government's projects of encouraging and supporting agricultural production, will be analyzed as well.
When it became necessary to document the passage of time, and when calendars were created and used, agricultural production also witnessed certain levels of development, and independent timetables and natural timetables became synchronized. Such condition must have led to the efforts of perceiving and analyzing the flow of time in a rational fashion, and such perception and analysis must have been integrated into the agricultural process. Thanks to such earlier efforts and notion that had existed in the ancient societies, the people in the early days of the Goryeo dynasty had the Weolryeong timetable, which has served for the basis of the government's philosophy of making agriculture its first priority, and its policy of supporting the promotion of agriculture.
