In France under the rule of Napoleon I, the majority of population was peasants. Estates of the peasantry were increased, feudal dues disappeared, and tax burdens reduced. Moreover, a rising trend of prices favoured the enrichment of peasants and left, in spite of requisitions and conscriptions, the memory of an ‘golden age’ to the French peasantry.
In the early years of the Consulate, the majority of witnesses accorded on the improvement of standard of living of the peasantry. The statistical data of prefects constitute very important sources on this point. It is certain that conditions of existences, nourishment, clothing, in some measure residence and furnishings, were improved. Napoleon incarnated for French peasants the social liberty and material progress. Meanwhile, new informations arrived in fragments and frequently distorted in rural districts. The public reading aloud system seemed preferable to the peasantry than the bulletin board, because many peasants could not read.
However, these improvements of the standard of living of the peasantry under Napoleon were fragile. The economic crisis of 1810-1812 and defeats in decisive battles brutally marked its limits. Discontents of the peasantry were increased during the last years of the Empire, meanwhile chances of peace decreased. The crisis of supplies of 1811-1812 increased the hostility toward the Empire. Thus 1813 and some successive years were decisively unsupportable to the peasantry and weekened their attachment to the Empire.
