Hubertine Auclert was the first person who proclaimed herself feminist and demanded women’s political right in France.
Her feminism was almost the same as that of other comtemporary feminists. It involved to refuse to accept the idea of women’s natural inferiority and to show that women’s inferiority was due to the culture and the history. The founders of the French feminist movement in the second half of the 19th century such as Leon Richer and Maria Deraismes insisted the ‘politique des petits pas’ which claimed only women’s civil rights. For them women’s political right was the ideal goal, but they deferred to demand it.
On this point Hubertine Auclert did not agree with them and did insist the ‘politique de l’assaut’ that demanded women’s political right. She considered it as ‘key of all other rights’.
Because her idea was new in French feminism, to inform it and gather sympathizers she founded the society “Le Droit des femmes” which became the society “Le Suffrage des femmes”,
Considering the press as the best means of propaganda, she founded the journal La Citoyenne in 1881. Even though it dealt female suffrage issue as the most important one, it also treated other issues concerning the women such as education, marriage, labor, and etc.
Because she started the women’s suffrage movement which few people understood, she was criticized by the public. But she dared to become a laughing-stock for others and finally succeeded in incorporating the issue into the French political discourse. She made almost all the feminists support the suffrage by the turn of the 20th century.
The suffrage for French women was given by the provisional goverment at Alger in 1944.
