This Report aims at the critical analysis of an unusual case of the cultural event which has an attribute of a festival and is substantially a sort of flea market, so as to figure out the relations between the marketplace and the festivity.
It is often to hear, that an ideal festival makes all the audience to participate in the joyful playground and with concentration. But most of festivals limit themselves to efficient procedures of event productions without maintaining spontaneous involving of people. A marketplace can be an alternative model of a carnival since it generally containes the exchange of goods, a strong motif on sales profits and a joy of consumption, feasts with invitations, solidarity to citizenship, community experiences in everyday life, rite of unity, diversity of participants, diversions, artistic perfomances or spectacles, and participations, in addition. Especially a 'flea market' is a smart invention to make a scene of exchange to turn out a reciprocal and communicative festivity space.
In modern cities or in metropolis the condition is much less to realize a 'festival of participation'. But a flea market can be one case because it has exchanges and market communications which is customized in capitalism and modern city life. The mechanism of the flea market is apt for modern cities as a small-scaled community festival is due in local areas.
So in this report, a study on 'what makes a festival a good one' and 'when marketplace has a festivity in modern cities' will be a crucial point to examine a case of flea market which is so-called 'Hongdae-Ap Free Market'. It is conceptualized as an 'art market'. It has sales of handicrafts, exhibition of artcrafts, friendship among amateur designers, young artists society and a representation of a sort of party and local marketplaces, so on. It is organized by some cultural activists and young artists residing in 'Hongdae-Ap' Area in Seoul since 2001, and opens every Saturday regularlly in a famous playground that has became a symbolism. of that locality. Every person can part in that market and need to be a volunteer. The festival can maintain with low finance targeting the 'self-sufficiency'. They have autonomy in making it much like citizenship.
The case presents us the trust as social capital for making a participation and a smart festival builings. It suggests that an exchange in marketplace, if in use value and gifts, can be a reciprocal transaction not only in a festival-builing but in making an alternative community.
