This study was conducted to investigate high school students' preference and satisfaction level regarding Senghoalhanbok style school-uniforms, and to analyze also the image of Senghoalhanbok style school-uniforms as perceived by high school students. Data were collected through questionnaires during Oct. 2003. Respondents consisted of 560 students: 280 students at two high schools having Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms and 280 students at two high schools having western style school uniforms, both located in Seoul. Data were analysed by frequency, percentages, factor analysis and t-tests. The results were as follows:
(1) The results showed that factors influencing students' satisfaction with Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms included appearance, comfort, durability, substitutability, and economics. Female students were more satisfied than male students regarding the appearance factor. No difference was found between male and female students concerning other factors. On the other hand, the satisfaction level of both female and male students toward school uniforms was considerably low.
(2) The major design factors that caused dissatisfaction with Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms were the length and width of lower wear(pants, skirts, etc.) and upper wear (blouses, jackets, etc.), and waist line After the experience of wearing Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms, the preference level went down. Female students especially became more negative to Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms compared to male students after the experience of wearing such uniforms.
(3) Factors underlying the image of Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms as perceived by high school students were propriety, fashionability, and individuality. In general, those who had previous experience wearing western style school uniforms displayed a more positive image toward Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms. The results of the study implied that Senghoalhanbok style school uniforms have room for improvement in the aspect of design.
