The critical importance of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poetry has been revaluated by modern feminist critics. Incorporating their critical achievement, this study aims at closely analyzing some of Browning's lyrical poems, which deal with the broad social issues in the comtemporary society such as mammonism, child labor and education, British imperialism and American slavery, specifically in terms of M. M. Bakhtin's notions of dialogue and carnival. In particular, five poems have been selected for this purpose: “The Cry of the Human,” “The Cry of the Children,” and “A Plea for the Ragged Schools of London.” In connection to the theme of social criticism, Browning's others poems will be hopefully discussed in subsequent studies.
In view of Bakhtin's broad notion of dialogue, Browning's poems comprehensively articulate in a prophetic voice their peculiarly radical social criticism beyond the public sphere of women's literature of sensibility, through an internal dialogism not only between speaker and auditor but also among various polyphonic voices implied in the poems. For example, “The Cry of the Human,” through a apocalyptic vision, satirizes “the curse of gold” dominant in the capitalist society. “The Cry of the Children” deals with the burning issue of child labor in an industrial society through a dialogic interaction between the humanitarian voice of the narrator and the realistic voice of the children. Starting with the problem of British imperialism and the comtemporary issue of “two nations,” the narrator of “A Plea for the Ragged Schools of London” tries to appeal to her “sisters” in England for the betterment of the conditions of England. The conclusion suggests that in view of Bakhtin's theory of dialogue, Browning's poems of social criticism provides a radical critique of contemporary society, which may be relevant to the condition of the present time.
