When the French revolution brought to England the debate on human liberty between the prorevolutionary civil class and the antirevolutuionary aristocratic class, William Blake put the conflicting ideas on human liberty into the relation of the “Contraries.” The conflicting ideas in Blake can not be synthesized into an imperative discourse, but shown as equal discourses. The prorevolutionary discourse criticizes the antirevolutionary discourse. At the same time it is criticized by the antirevolutionary discourse. The prorevolutionary discourse and the antirevolutionary discourse are on the process of striving against each other. This is Blake's strategy to seek the voices of the sociocultural nonstream groups.
This paper aims at tracing the process which hardly seems to reach any conclusion. Looking into the process will make a reader to find that there is no authorial voice which would come to a conclusion. A reader himself has to figure out the meanings of the conflicting discourses. He would know the limitations in both of the discourses. In fact, both of the discourses reflect only the interests of the civil class and the aristocratic class. Due to these limitations, a reader would view the discourses of both classes from a whole society and feel what exists beyond the discourses which are advocated by both classes.
