The creature in Mary W. Shelley's Frankenstein can best be described as a monster with no name. The monster's ugly countenance prevents him from standing in the visual field. The fact is that his ugly countenance cannot be the specific object but the virtual or phenomenal appearance in beholder's eyes. The monster is reflected as the devil itself. However, the monster is humanity's creation and it seems to be the subject to think and see while he learns through self study. Language gives the monster knowledge and through studying language alone, the monster believes his “abject body” can be detached and therefore can hide his ugliness behind his language at least temporarily. Even so, the monster is not given the time or opportunity to speak and thus form significant relationship. He is viewed as a horrifying creature and the devil, and nothing else. The monster cannot inhabit the visual field as he is unable to coexist with other people. He only hides to see. However, the monster's achievement as subject in that he has a chance to see his own body as well as how other people see him. When one sees a picture as a subject such as in the manner of W. J. T. Mitchell, the monster can be seen as a speaking by himself. However, language does not exist in solitude-without human interaction it lacks all meaning. By having a terrifying figure, the monster's words, in the few circumstances that he is allowed to speak, are viewed as ‘excess’ and not ‘supplement’, unlike those of Safie, Felix's foreign lover, who learns language too. For this reason, the monster, by not being able to stand in front of people, is unable to be subject or ‘the showable’ object.
