This paper is concerned with investigating the diachronical change of ‘siphta’ phrase. Although the ‘siphta’ phrase representing ‘hope’ and ‘guess’ is situated as an adjective in contemporary Korean, it requires a preceding verb.
Although the ‘siphta’ is the present form in contemporary Korean, it was used in ‘sikputa’ or ‘sitputa’ in medieval Korean. By the 16th century ‘k’ was deleted from the ‘sikputa’ type to become ‘siputa’. These two heterogeneous types coexisted as stems. In modern Korean the ‘sikputa’ type was completely extinguished, leaving ‘siputa/sipta’, which was then fixed as ‘siphta’ type in contemporary Korean.
This paper also studies the process in which the ‘-ko siphta’ has been formed from ‘-kocye sikputa’ with particular attention placed on preceding ending. In the 15th century the ‘-kocye sikputa’ was primarily used with the preceding ending ‘-kocye’ presenting ‘desire/hope’, but the ‘-kocye siputa’, a heteromorphy of ‘sikputa’, was also present. However, in line with the wide-spread change of the ‘-e’ type ending of medieval Korean to ‘-ko’ in modern Korean, the preceding ending ‘-kocye’ representing ‘desire/hope’ was transformed into ‘-ko’ to become ‘-ko siputa’ in modern Korean.
The ‘-n/lka siphta’ phrase expressing ‘guess’ was preceded only by ‘-n/lka’ in medieval Korean, but from the 16th century it started to combine with final ending or conjectural ending. In modern Korean it even became to represent an element in sentences. This is related with the characteristic of ‘siphta’ leading embedded clause.
