The twentieth century has witnessed the so-called secularization of the Christian universities and colleges. One of its outcomes is the crisis of the ministry of college chapel. In Korea, the incident of the fasting demonstration of Mr. Kang Eui Seok in Taekwang Christian High School for the freedom from mandatory chapel service, is one of the signs of secularization. We cannot expect the more benevolent judgment for the mandatory chapel attendance by the Korean local courts or the Constitutional Court afterward. Also, it became uneasy to make the Christian education a major agenda within the college community. Chaplain's office was fallen into one of many administrative departments instead of an ideology-giving spiritual leader.
But crisis provides opportunities. We have to set up a new vision and a new goal in such a crisis. That is to say, chaplains should be the avantgarde of the so-called "Christian college." They should not be satisfied with a part of the "mission college," the goal of which is the evangelism. Not only leading worship service or teaching Christian liberal arts, but providing the ideology of the college and urging faculty members to implement the Christian scholarship.
