In 1910's Korean new intellectuals who accepted European individualism and conservatism systematically, was being extension of HanMal social darwinism, developed the modern bourgeois thoughts. And they made progress than a former generation. Though they made much of a value to pursue personal profit and development, they recognized an individuality and a society to be an organism, and they emphasized personal moral duty for the nation and the society.
This thought of social organism made much of a tradition. Because a society was the creature which was living and not machine, and was taking down a root like a tree in the past, the traditional succession is indivisible relationship with the development of person combined with a society. They regarded a nation as that kind of a personal gathering, too. Under imperialism world system of the law of the jungle in particular, it was aimed at through the individual awareness that is a social member and the development of a personality, because the nation which was an actual survival competition unit was a personal gathering. It was the existence to have the durability that was not only the area range or instantaneous group, and formed history for a long time in the same area at this time. This understanding about the nation was to do a communication a bit with the national organism of German romanticism.
On the view of social darwinistic, conservative, romantic nationalism, the preservation of tradition was for proof to do the national survival ability, and it was a way to keep national identity and union. In these intentions it was attempted to preserve the national essence on the SIN MUN KWAN(新文館) and CHOSUN KWANG MUN HOE(朝鮮光文會) where were Choe, Nam-Seon(崔南善) executed the center. The SIN MUN KWAN was as if salon and the place where intellectuals had been study in Japan haunted. They reissued all kinds of culture books and a Korean classics, and published Korean ethnic culture studies. It was a purpose to improve personal culture and civilization through 'worship about ancestors' and 'preservation of old culture', and it was for the nation composed with individual to keep national cultural subjectivity and identity. In a word, the 'civilization' and 'preservation of national essence' were necessary for an national modern survival together.
Thus the 'national essence' recognition that was formed at the middle of HanMal nationalism thought was readjusted as the theme of the national modern awareness since under the Japanese imperialism. And it was basic to oppose a destruction of ethnic culture by other nation because these preservation of national essence made much of singularity of a national organism. Therefore, they criticized that Japanese imperialism colonized the Korean tradition culture, for example IlSeonDongJoRon and the assimilation of national culture.
However, their movement of preservation of national essence emphasized an economic cultural progress of the national organism than independence. While a landlord and a capitalist kept the existing system to lead, they made much of a union of Kurturnation. And they were off national political pending problem and weaken recognition of class problem and meaning of ethnic independence. Their this cultural and conservative inclinations are advanced with the movement of enhancement of traditional Korean culture which strengthens the class of oneself and a location of thoughts when capital-nationalists performed 'Culture movement' within the system under 'Culture politics' of the Japanese imperialism in 1920's.
