The purpose of this study was to delve into how classical novels, especially Samsaengrook, perceived the heavens. Samsaengrok was an anonymous Korean novel, and when it’s written was unknown as well. That described Hyangran and Manchun who sinned in the heavenly world. After coming down to the earthly world three times, they went back to the heavens as lovers. While they realized their desires for each other in the earth, they worked out the problems of the earth like war or poverty. They applied the order of the heavens to the earth in the course of tackling the problems with it. Thus, there was a close connection between the heavens and the earth in this novel. Accordingly, this novel took a personal view of the heavens by giving human personality to everything of the heavens.
However, other classical novels looked at the heavens in a different manner. Changsaengameuirok, which was written by a novel man and based on Sung Confucianism, believed in Libeopcheon, arguing that well- trained individuals could move even the heavens. In contrast, Samhanseupyu posed a question about existing view of the heavens and was skeptical about that. Thus, the way classical novels looked at the heavens varied from generation to generation, and authors perceived the heavens from a different standpoint as well.
