One of the recent trends in studies in modern American drama has been the increasing attention paid to masculinities of the male characters. According to these studies, since masculinity is a construct just as feminity is one, male characters' behavior should be understood as performance or masquerade which caters to the traditional gender role. This paper aims to explore various manifestations of masculinities in family drama, which may offer a new perspective to interpret male characters in modern American drama.
First, male characters define their masculinity through their ability to support the family. If the man of the family cannot feed the family members, his sense of masculinity becomes insecure and threatened as we can see in the case of Willy Loman. Second, these male characters assert their manhood by subjugating and oppressing the Other. Thus they not only ridicule the effeminate and lesser men but also suppress "the feminine"within and without themselves. Third, this oppression often takes the form of sexual exploitation of women and leads to the facilitation of homosocial bonding with other men. Fourth, through this bonding, male characters engage in social and personal dialogue which reveal the fear and anxiety embedded deep down in their psyche, thus showing that assertion of masculinity is ultimately a masquerade and a performance.
