This paper aims at a thorough examination of Freud's paper, "The Uncanny" (1919), in order to place it at the center of Freud's work. It is a place where Freud becomes a true-Freudian via Lacan's "return to Freud", and this is because "The Uncanny" prepares the way for Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle", to which Lacan returns. In the process of claiming the central place, which "The Uncanny" deserves to occupy, this paper presents the Janus-face of Freud: one face represents the ideas such as 'certainty', 'clarity,' and 'visibility' while the other stands for 'uncertainty', 'ambiguity,' and 'invisibility'. This paper will argue that the balance between the two faces should be broken and it is the latter that subverts the former. Only then can the opened crack bridge the gap between Freud and Lacan.
This paper first looks at the contents of "The Uncanny," pointing out the destination towards which Freud is consciously driving at, in other words, castration complex. The obvious problem of Freud's summary of "The Sandman" in "The Uncanny" has been pointed out by Sarah Kofman, and this paper will attempt a close reading of his summary in order to demonstrate his misreading of the novel. This will then be related to Lacan's reinterpretation of "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" in his seminar Ⅱ, before connecting it to ?i?ek's paper, "The Organs without Bodies." Finally, the paper will indicate various details of "The Sandman," which Freud has ignored, thus making it clear that Freud's summary has been built upon the bases of 'selection', 'distortion' and, above all, his 'presupposition'. However, it will be argued that it is also Freud himself who leads us to the beyond of the 'certainty' of an answer, enabling us to break out of it.
