Failure analysis and prevention are important functions to all of the engineering structures. The engineer often plays a lead role in the analysis of failures, whether a component or product fails in service or if failure occurs in manufacturing or during production processing. In any case, one must determine the cause of failure to prevent future occurrence, and/or to improve the performance of the device, component or structure.
Visible examples of the application of failure analysis involves all of the transportation industry, buildings and bridges, power plants and electronic devices. For example, aircraft accidents are remembered by the public because of the unusually high loss of life and broad extent of damage that is typical of this type of accident. Through the analysis of failures and the implementation of preventive measures, significant improvements have been realized in the qualities of products and systems. This requires not only an understanding of the role of failure analysis, but also an appreciation of quality assurance and user expectations. Therefore, it is important to have failure prevention and life prediction techniques. It saves money and human life. In this paper, the recent development of structural failure prevention and life prediction techniques will be discussed.
