Evidences of the existence of a correlation between environmental management advancements and stronger financial performance are mixed. This paper provides an indepth study on whether the past findings apply to the Korean market as well. In order to do this, the study examines a variety of "green" (firms that have been designated as Environmentally Friendly Companies(EFC) by the Korean Ministry of Environment).
Event study methodology is used in this study. The unit of analysis is the environmental event which is defined by designation of firms as EFC. Event period is limited to 9 years(from 1995 to 2003). Our sample size contains 160 environmental events. Cumulative average abnormal returns(CAR) are estimated based on the market adjusted model.
Major results can be summarized as follows:
First, although not statistically significant, companies that are designated as environmentally friendly tend to yield higher stock returns.
