History as a discipline is now in danger of disappearance at the overall attack of postmodernism. In order to escape the crisis, many suggestions of ‘history popularization’ have appeared. On the other hand, historians and casual observers alike have experienced the IT revolutions that accompanied the introduction and development of the personal computer and internet technologies such as the World Wide Web. In this digital period, so many academic resources have been dizitalized under the sponsorship of government and public organizations. Now we are in need of inquiring into the production, circulation and consumption of history knowledge. This thesis aims at suggesting that the history educators and researchers need to understand the recent technologies, by presenting the practical cases of using the digital resources in history education.
Digital resources in history education are divided into two dimensional and three dimensional resources. For example, map in history education is essential. there are maps created by using Acrobat Programs including Adobe PDF. These can be seen in extension and reduction. Maps using the shockwave plug-in can include many informations that can be seen step by step. Those resources need the complicated design. Many digital resources using the flash program can also be interactive adequately if it is considered at the initial design. The examples are these : Introduction to Ancient Culture made by Teisei Corporation in Japan; Ancient Remains at Acropolis made by Ancient-Greece.Org; Paint the Cathedral made by BBC.
Three dimensional resources in history education are recently so popular. Google Maps of GoogleEarth and WorldWind of NASA provide now real time three dimensional maps. Digital resources based in virtual reality are divided into Panorama and Web 3D. QTVR Panorama is based in images captured by three dimensional scanner. PTGui(Graphical User Interface for Panorama Tool) is a famous tool. Among the tools that realize Web 3D, VRML(Vertual Reality Markup Language) deveolped at 1996 is popular. The examples are these : The Mary Rose of Henry VIII's flagship; Captain Cook's Endeavour at 1768; World War One Trench; Ironbridge symbolizing the industrial revolution of England; Medieval St Edmunds Abbey; London Bridge at 1500; Viking Age Farmhouse; Housesteads Roman Fort at Hadrian Wall; Scottish Crannog at the age of Iron.
