The period of Koryo developed a highly art of qualty based on buddhisim. In expecial. The lacquerware with mother-of-pearl inlay decorations of Koryo (高麗螺鈿) is very famous for their elegant expression and technics of high qualty.
The lacker wares with mother-of-pearl inlay decorations of Koryo (高麗螺鈿) can been seen about 20 pieces. In these, There is only one work in Korea. And It was the years of 1920 that the existence of lacquerware of Koryo had been discovered and studied. In detail, the discovery of the lacquerware of Koryo had been done by professor Rokukakusisui (六角紫水) and Yosinotomio (吉野富雄) of Urusi department in the Tokyo national university of arts. And the study of the lacker wares of Koryo has been leaded by Japanese scholars because the most of them has been in the museums of Japan. Yet the analysis of materials and technics of them by scientifical research had not been solved.
This paper is result of research on a lacker ware Sutra Box for containing Buddhist scriptures with mother-of-pearl inlay decorations depicting chrysanthemums of Koryo period in Tokyo national museum heritaged from the family of Mori (毛利家). This work is 378㎜ long, 192㎜ wide and 260㎜ high. This box has a lid with sloping comers, and a raised rectangle in the center upon which is written “The Bang Kuang Bul Hwa Um Kyung (大方廣佛華嚴經).” These words are made of mother-of-pearl inlays, and are proof that this sutra box was meant to contain Buddhist scriptures. Encircling the rounded comers of the lid are chrysanthemums, and the comers and sides are decorated with chrysanthemums and scrolls. The sides of the box also have chrysanthemums decoration. These flower stamens are inlaid with turtleshell of vermilion pigment. Thinking that the design of chrysanthemums is similiar to that of inlaid porcelain of koryo, this box considers as about 12c and belongs to a old style of mother-of-pearl inlay decorations of Koryo.
I can examine the parts of destruction and restoration, and it can be seen the metal line and desined destroyed by X-ray. The subject of this paper is the results of the materials and technics, as below.
1. It was suggested that the materias of this box is pine tree by examinations of X-ray.
2. The cutting of mother of pearl is conducted by small knife. Each decoration' s length is as follows: chrysanthemum' s petals 4㎜ chrysanthemum's leaf 4-5㎜, O-shapes 2㎜, X-shapes 4㎜.
3. The metal lines has two types in name one line metal and twisted metal line made two lines. The one line is made of Sn(40%) and Pb(60%). The twisted metal line is composed of Cu(70-75%), Zn(20%) and Pb(5%). and the decorate metal seen on the front and back of this box is composed of Cu(70%), Zn(30%).
4. The letter conceiled by decorated metal is Hwang-Yi(黃二). It means the second sutra Box of yellow literal by the thousand literal Chunzamun(千字文).
5. The shitaji has been applied to powder bone by cow.
6. The turtleshell sheets are decorated with designs formed from small square and its length is 1㎜.
