It has been shown that mother-of-pearl crafts were spread in the era of Goryuh Dynasty by studying ancient relics and books From the 3rd century B.C to the United Shilla Kingdom, Soongchil crafts prospered
During the Goryuh Dynasty, our ancestors made mother-of-pearl crafts popular nation wide by studying chinese methods throughout the Dang and Song dynasties. In that era, even though Chil Crafts were based on the Ga Shik method, they prospered in China and Japan. In Goryuh, by using Jul Eum Jil and geun Eum Jil methods, Mother-of-pearl crafts prospered along with Buddhism In the beginning of the Jo Sun dynasty, Buddhism symbols were used on mother-of-pearl crafts. In the middle of the Jo Sun Dynasty, Hwajo, Kuksunmun, Ssanghwamun, Maejomun, Sakunja which were all based on Confucianism, were used In the end of the Jo Sun dynasty, by using Jilumjil and Knumjll, Sansupungkyoung, Sipjangsangmun, Dongsikmulmun were developed and showed their naturahsm.
Korean mother-of-pearl crafts not only imitate or follow old methods of mother-of-pearl crafts, but also improved on their quality It can be seen that our traditional mother-of-pearl crafts maintained their pragmatism and esthetic beauty while changing according to our ancestors lifestyles.
In modern society, which is based on materialism, traditional art crafts are not compete with advanced telecommunication systems, new technologies and Improved transportation systems New materials made industrial art crafts prosper so the prices of crafts went down. However, traditional mother-of-pearl will not be succeeded if we try to regain its competitiveness by simply imitating old methods without effort. Thus, in order to make traditional mother-of-pearl crafts in creative ways, we should use traditional art crafts materials and methods
