Art history of ceramics is an aspect of art history which examine into historical facts objectively and systematically with ceramics. The study try to make restoration of men of old times life style and culture through ceramics which used at that times. Life style and culture, mentioned above, stands for social-economic history such as relationships between consumer and supplier of ceramics. In addition, it means tactical and artistic sense of ceramists, cultural exchange about religion and politics.
To establish the study, many kinds of methods have been brought. Some scholars makes suggestion about chronological recording of ceramics study through abundant experiences of excavation work and create analytical criticism of excavational consequences. The other group also propose employment of documentary records through compare with ceramics itself which contain chronological standard. When we synthesize these methods all together, we can make a foundation about art history of ceramics.
Researches on art history of Korean ceramics divided by two period. Before 1945, the study mainly progressed by Japanese. However, after 1960s, basis of that topic moved to Koreans. Focus of that time are collect foundational facts scientifically rather than use results as teaching material.
On the other hands, after 1980s, art history of Korean ceramics made a big growth quickly. Korean society got through dramatical economic growth, for this reason, many parts of country changed with huge constructional work. Undergo that sequences, diverse excavational results were made. After industrial tendency made heavy loss about many traditional and historical materials, the masses started to realize importance of conventions and traditions. It makes many exhibitions and academical seminars about art history which contain Korean ceramics especially. With that results, Researchers conclude many sorts of academical achievements and writings.
In this atmosphere, many scholars made investigations, as a academic degree thesis and separate volume. Among them, Kang kyung suk's writing cover whole subjects of Korean ceramics, especially the book contain pottery. That is main difference compare with other books which demonstrate Korean ceramics. In many university, art history department uses the book called 『Art history of Korean ceramics』by Kang kyung suk as a teaching material. However, the book does not come across newly discovered academical facts which accumulated after 1990s.
Nowadays, chronological standard of Korean ceramics changed much with newly accumulated excavational ceramic remains. Consider with that proposition, we need to create new teaching material for training pupils of art history. In art history of ceramics, newly created teaching material should contain archeological knowledges and various academical results which could make reasonable chronological standard about Korean ceramics.
