The Mount Odae edition of ‘Annals of Joseon Dynasty’ includes records from the reign of King Taejo to King Myungjong, and it is a revised edition just prior to the final edition. The royal court had kept the revised edition in Mount Odae because for publishing annals from King Taejo to King Myungjong at once, they were short of papers and could not manage to make four final editions each. However, Mount Odae has final editions from the reign of King Seonjo. They also continued to keep the annals in 3 royal archives other than the Chunchu-kwan, as they did in early Joseon dynasty.
With reference of the documents of Mount Odae edition, we are able to confirm the status of the annals chronologically. It’s contents include the enshrinement of the annals after the edition of king Seonjo, reading of the annals, mending of the archives, and records of examination during the process of ventilation and drying of the books, etc. According to the document from 1909, there were 788 volumes of annals in the Archive of Mount Odae.
The Mount Odae edition, which was kept systematically and in great care by the nation, face the tragedy in 1913, when taken by the Japanese Imperialists to Tokyo University. Most of the taken annals were burnt in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Those who miraculously survived the earthquake had been dispersed, 27 volumes to Kyujanggak of Seoul National University, and 47 volumes to Tokyo University.
The return of the 47 remaining volumes from Tokyo University has great historical meaning, for it is the reunification of the Mount Odae editions in 93 years, and for all of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty is now kept in Korea.
