Chartism ‘retreated’ or ‘decreased’ as a mass movement after 1848. But it has never ‘disappeared.’ Chartism lasted during the 1850s in many ways. It demolished in 1860. Although chartism failed, because of its historical significance, it has been studied by many historians in many countries from contemporary to the recently.
There are many studies on the chartism, but they are concentrated on the period of before 1848. This thesis aims to review the chartism after 1848 especially on the character, international chartism, and Ernest Jones’s chartism after 1848. Three points derived from examined above can be summed up as follows.
Firstly, later chartism has the character of diversity and continuity. It has developed with opposition to the O’Connor’s chartism. Secondly, chartists have interested in international affair as well as domestic social and economical problems. Particularly, they have focused on republicanism, democracy, reform of the system in relation to the human rights, and resistance of the despotism, International chartism has very importance, because it united classes in England during the 1850s, and it gave the basis of the reform movement in 1860s.
Lastly, Ernest Jones was a representative socialism chartist in 1850s. He has activated the waning chartism and took the lead later chartism. Jones have acted lively suffrage movement after NCA’s dissolution. Summing up, later chartism was divided, but its characters were diversity, the power of the life. The chartism of the 1850s offered basis for the Reform of 1867.
