The Chartism began in May, 1838 when the People’s Charter was published. It lasted 1860. The Chartist movement has a very important role in the 19th century England history. This theme aims to review the Newport rising in 1839. I have two results in this theme as follows. Firstly, the first Chartist convention launched on 4th February, 1839. The convention received about 500,000 signatures and attacked the House of Commons which contemporaries have thought non-representative system. After moved to Birmingham, the convention finally suggested the ‘sacred month’ or ‘general strikes.’ The convention tried general strikes on August, 1839. As a results, many chartists was arrested and imprisoned. After the event, J. Frost and chartists discussed about the Newport rising many times. The Newport rising erupted on the night of the 4th November, 1839, but it has failed for many reasons. Secondly, the Newport rising of 1839 was community responses. The north-east, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Birmingham, Wales and London followed Welsh rising in Newport. On the night of 3-4 November 1839, 7,000 miners and iron-workers from the South Wales coalfield marched in three columns to Newport. They intended to launch a massive uprising to create a ‘people’s republic’ in the Welsh valleys. This uprisings helped to bring about a revolutionary situation on the side of the Welsh border. It was a never small affairs.
