Northern Liberator(NL) played an important role in north east Chartism. This thesis aims to examine the publication and the roles of NL in Chartism. Two points derived from examined above can be summed up as follows.Firstly, NL launched on 21 October, 1837. By 20 January 1838, NL boasted an average weekly circulation of 4,000 copies. Augustus Hardin Beaumont and Robert Blakey intended to the circulation of NL all over the country. NL was published in satires and separate editions. After all, NL attained fame in Chartism and commercial interests. The paper collapsed at the close of 1840.Secondly, NL leaded the north east Chartism. Furthermore, it developed anti-New Poor Law movement and claimed anti-Semitism. During 1839 NL depended upon 'physical forces.' And it also supported economic reforms in Chartism. NL operated not only a political body but a local newspaper. Furthermore it showed the mixed news and entertainment style. Anyway, it was the lion of the Chartism and radicalism in north east in 19 century England.(Jinju National University/nch64610@chollian.net)
