Although the increase of automobile comparing with other modes of transportation is very rapid, the supply side of surface transportation such as constructing new roads and rebuilding roads resides in the steady side. It is understood that the construction of transportation infrastructure requires tremendous time and expenditure. Due to this reason, It is reality that limited investment for transportation infrastructure construction is undertaking. Considering all these facts, maximization of existing road capacity rather than expanding road infrastructure is essential for our situation.
In order to utilize the existing road effectively, it is essential to define the function of each individual roads. However, quite a few routes and sections of roads remain either the function of roads are uncertain or the relationship of traffic demand and transportation network are irrelevant. Thus, it is necessary to classify the road that can be utilized efficiently by its characteristics. For this purpose, 13 different parameters were analyzed on some of the roads in Pusan. And, based on these parameters, the factors were derived. Then, the roads were further classified according to factor score and the cluster analysis. Consequently, roads, which emphasize the functionality, were classified into 7 different levels. For the after study, newly developed road classification scheme was compared with the current scheme of road classification. Newly approached classification of roads based on its characteristics will allow maximizing the use of existing roads as well as providing a good guideline for planning and devising structured transportation network.
