In most of rural areas of Korea small town centers which comprise market places, local government offices and various types of commercial facilities are centers of urban activities and are used for the exchange, storage and redistribution of goods.
This paper is a study of impact of activity agglomeration intensity on forming functions of each center to search for spatial hierarchical structure of rural areas, and includes survey and analysis of various types of activities in selected 41 small town centers.
Influence of activity agglomeration intensity in the centers can be explained through three stages : Group Ⅰ of population size under 1,000 persons is a loosely-structured style of urban area and functions very limited primary services of eating houses, drugstores, machinery repair shops, barbershops, and educational facilities, Group Ⅱ of population size over 1,000 persons to under 3,000 persons adds to some secondary service functions, Group Ⅲ of population size over 3,000 persons has a large proportion of secondary and tertiary facilities which allows their more specialized services to be used more easily.
