Urban spaces are not merely artifacts but cultural products. The generation and transformation of their forms need to be understood in relation to historical socio-cultural context. This study aims to discover the genetic morphological characteristics and the influence of cultural contexts on them in a traditional ‘Han-ok’ residential area of Jeonju, Korea. It is especially concerned with the spatial organization of dwelling units and their access spaces.
In the traditional residential area, the dead-end paths, which have role of transitional access spaces that connect public spaces with private dwelling units, are the products of historical stratification of morphological changes in response to successive plot divisions and amalgamations. Basically they are under private land ownership. It means that the morphological characteristics of dead-end paths have strong relationship with the cultural norms of land owners or residents as a way of daily residential life.
